History

Bion translates from Japanese as “beautiful sound”, added to Cantorum to form Bion Cantorum which translates to Singers of Beautiful Sound.

The concept of developing a choral group dedicated to providing beautiful, exciting music to area residents and to provide the opportunity of these residents to participate in a mixed community chorus was a seed planted and encouraged by Maestro T. Francis Wada (former Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra) during a conversation with two of the founding members of Bion Cantorum.

Bion Cantorum's Executive Board chose Roy W. Engler, former Artistic Director of the Suncoast Chorale, to be Bion's Artistic Director.  He was chosen because of his innate ability to produce great sounds from singers and as Maestro Wada stated, “he is a magnificent choral craftsman.”
